This petition is intended to urge Twentieth Century Fox to restore "The Sand Pebbles" motion picture to its original running time of 196 minutes. The current version of this epic film available on DVD has a running time of 182 minutes.
Fans of "The Sand Pebbles" have identified at least 6 scenes that were edited out of the 1966 premiere roadshow version. Restoration of these scenes is deemed to be critical with regard to the physical aging (and possible degradation) of the existing film elements necessary to accomplish this task.
In addition to the historical importance of the missing scenes, restoring these scenes allows for better continuity and faithfulness to the script and to the novel on which the movie is based.
The Sand Pebbles motion picture was honored with 8 Academy Award nominations and will be celebrating its 40th Anniversary in three years. This would seem to be the perfect opportunity to commence work on a complete restoration of this film timed to coincide with its anniversary date in 2006.
For more information on the missing scenes, please visit The Sand Pebbles Website on the provided links.
Upon completion of this petition (date to be determined) the tabulated results will be sent to:
